A Guide to University Study For International Students at Anhui Normal University

I  General Information

Founded in 1928, Anhui Normal University (ANU) is one of the oldest institues of higher learning established in Anhui Province. With its location in Wuhu City which is well-known as a land of rice and fish and nested in the southern bank of the world famous Yangtze River, ANU is widely acknowledged as one of the key provincial universities with natural charms of southern Anhui and famous talents from Anhui.

ANU is now composed of 18 colleges, offering a complete and systematic student cultivation system which varies at different degree levels from bachelor to doctors and in different forms from full-time higher education, adult higher education to international education. ANU has now developed into a comprehensive full-fledged university that provides subject studies in literature, history, philosophy, economics, administration, laws, science, engineering, pedagogy and etc.

Presently, ANU possesses 7 doctor-degree posts, 88 master-degree posts and 60 under-graduate majors. The university has occupies an area of 1.93 million square meters in total, which is environmentally ideal for teaching and learning.

ANU is one of the first group of universities that were accredited by the Ministry of Education to accept international students enjoying Chinese government scholarships. Besides, it is one of the national bases of Teaching Chinese Language and Culture for Oversea Chinese and the location of Anhui Provincial Center of Chinese Language International.

College of International Education is both an academic school for Chinese language leaning and an administration institute for international students. It has a well-equipped teaching building, an international students’ apartment with modern facilities and a sound faculty. At present, it offers Chinese language teaching not only for general students but also for undergraduates in Chinese language majors and postgraduates in the subject of teaching Chinese as the second language. Besides, the college can transfer students to other colleges for further education according to their requirements.

Since 1985, the college has received more than 3000 foreign students from over 40 countries or regions of the world and established long-term friendly cooperation and academic communication with universities or institutes of higher learning, research departments and academic organizations in America, Britain, Germany, Finland, Australia, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Japan, Viet Nam and Cuba. II. Program , major and specialty offered

1. Chinese language and cultural exchange program:

(1) Short-term language and cultural studies

School length: 4 weeks—3 months at different classes according to Chinese level, group students taught in a special class

Enrollment and application deadline:

Spring class: March to May

Summer class: June to August

Fall class: September to November

The dead line is 2 weeks before each class starts.

Courses offered:

Chinese crash courses, Daily Chinese conversation, Chinese shadowboxing, Calligraphy, Painting, Knowledge of Chinese folk custom and culture, Traditional Chinese sports health care, HSK intensive training

Out-campus activities:

Sight-seeing along the Yangtze River, visits to historical relics and scenic spots in Wuhu and famous tourist sites such as Mount Huangshan, Mount Jiuhuashan, and ancient villages such as Xidi and Hongcun in southern Anhui, and visits to nearby large cities such as Nanjing, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Shanghai

(2) Long-term language studies:

School length: 5 months--2 years, 20hrs a week, taught at different classes according to students’ Chinese level

Enrollment and application deadline:

Spring term starts at late February and the deadline for application is January 20.

Fall term starts at early September and the deadline for application is August 20.

Main courses: Intensive reading, Listening, Oral Chinese, Extensive reading, Writing, Translation, Chinese Culture

Subsidiary courses: Grammar, Chinese pronunciation, Skill training for HSK, Enjoyment of traditional Chinese custom and culture, Chinese Martial Arts, Calligraphy, Painting

 

2. Undergraduate majors

(1) Major of Chinese language and literature

School length: 4 years

Enrollment and application deadline:

School starts at early September and the deadline for application is July 15. Students are required to pass HSK above grade 4.

Main compulsory courses: Advanced Chinese, Advanced listening, Advanced oral Chinese, Chinese composition, Chinese news and magazine reading, Modern Chinese Grammar and rhetoric, Modern Chinese lexicology, Selected works of Contemporary literature, History of Chinese literature, Ancient Chinese, Skill training for HSK

(2) Other majors offered  

School length: 4 -6 years

Enrollment and application deadline:

School starts at early September and the deadline of application is July 15.

College of International Education is in charge of enrollment. Liberal-arts students are required to pass HSK above grade 3 and students of science above grade 5. School starts at early September and students are required to pass HSK above grade 7.

III. Expenses:

1. Short-term program costs:

(1) Registration fee: 300 RMB Yuan per person

(2 ) Tuition:2,600 RMB Yuan for 4 weeks and 600 RMB Yuan for each additional week

(3 ) Accommodation: 20—30 RMB Yuan per person per day for a double room

(4 ) Food: Fixed meals are prepared. Common cost is 60 RMB Yuan per person per day.

(5 ) Books and supplies: 200 RMB Yuan per person per term

(6) Tourist fee: Fees will be charged according to different tourist routes required by students.

(7) Age limit: Participants should be healthy and are under the age of 65.

If any educational agents could organize students in group of more than 20, you are warmly welcomed

and favorable charge conditions are provided.

2. Long-term program costs:

(1)    Enrollment fee: 400RMB Yuan per person

(2)    Books: 500RMB Yuan each academic year(estimated)

(3)    Tuition:

IV. Accommodation and costs:

The university has a fully-equipped building for our international students. Each room has

a TV set, an air-conditioner, a telephone, a bath-room and etc. Besides, on the first floor there is a kitchen with several refrigerators and a laundry. All these make our students’ living here convenient and pleasant. Costs for students studying for more than half a year are as followed:

(1) Double room: 15 RMB Yuan per day per person

(2) Single room:  28RMB Yuan per day per person

V. Location Advantages and Travel Convenience :

Anhui Normal University is located in Wuhu city in the southern bank of the Yangtze River in Anhui Province. Known as a land of fish and rice and a city with a history of 2 thousand years, Wuhu has developed into a prosperous modern metropolis in southern Anhui by its newly-built downtown Pedestrian Street, Jiuzi Square and the Yangtze River Bridge. Thanks to its ideal location, Wuhu is not only a center of transportation by air, railway, car and ship but also a cross-door providing an easy access to its nearby globally famous tourist scenic spots such as Mount Huangshan, Xidi and Hongcun which are awarded by UNESCO as the world natural and cultural heritage sites, and Mount Jiuhuashan, one of China’s four famous Buddhist shrines and Mount Qiyunshan, one of China’s four famous Taoist shrines. From Wuhu, you can get to Nanjing within 2 hours and Shanghai within 4 hours and it is ideal place to live and study comfortably.
